The Oscar M. Lopez Center is inviting professional and independent filmmakers to submit to Mga Kwento ng Klima Short Films. The competition aims to generate climate stories told from the local context, highlighting unique climate realities and notions of resilience, in local languages.

This project is an extension of the OML Center and ABS-CBN DocuCentral’s 60-minute documentary produced in 2019 entitled “Mga Kwento ng Klima”, which features how climate has shaped Filipino culture and identity.

Eligibility and Film Specifications

  • The competition will only accept three-minute short films (including opening and closing credits) about the Filipino experience of climate change. Films about environment, biodiversity, and other related topics with no climate lens will not be accepted.
  • Entries must be a live-action video in a narrative format of any of the following genres: drama, comedy, musical, action, suspense, historical, or science fiction.
  • Films using regional languages or dialects must have English subtitles.
  • Any music or songs used in the entry must be original or must have secured permissions from the original artist and/or copyright owner/s.
  • Each participating filmmaker may submit up to two film entries.
  • Filmmakers should use a smartphone to shoot the entire film.
  • The film entry must be submitted as a digital file with the following specifications:
    • MOV or MP4 format
    • High Definition quality
    • Minimum of 1920 x 1080 pixels (1080p)
    • Aspect ratio 16:9
  • Each film must be accompanied by:
    • 15-second film teaser (digital copy, MP4 format)
    • 16 x 10 inch film poster (digital copy, JPEG format)

Submission Process and Deadline

  • No submission fee to join.
  • All entries must be submitted via email by 11:59 pm on November 18, 2022.
  • Links to the entry should be emailed to [email protected] with the subject format “Balangay Project – MKK Shorts | Title of the Film”. Make sure that the file is accessible and downloadable via the link.

Awarding and Prizes

  • Films will be judged based on the following criteria:
    • Climate lens and story concept (25%)
    • Directing (25%)
    • Cinematography (15%)
    • Production Design (15%)
    • Editing (10%)
    • Sound Design (10%)
  • Winning filmmakers will be awarded cash prizes during the awarding ceremony:
    • Best Film – PHP 50,000
    • 2nd Place – PHP 30,000
    • 3rd Place – PHP 20,000
    • Special Jury Award – PHP 20,000
  • The decision of the Board of Judges is final. The judges have the right to not award any if no entry should merit it.

Others

  • Intellectual property rights shall be co-owned with the OML Center.
  • OML Center has royalty-free rights to use, disclose, and publicly display the entries for the purposes of promoting the mission and goals of the Center, provided that such use has no commercial gain.
