The OML Center, ABS-CBN Sagip-Kapamilya and Energy Development Corporation (EDC) were recognized by the Office for Presidential Assitance on Rehabilitation and Recovery (OPARR) for their rehabilitation efforts in the Yolanda-affected areas. OPARR Undersecretary Danilo Antonio and CSO Manager Irwin Baylon visited the EDC Head Office last 15 December 2014 and presented the tokens of appreciation in an informal ceremony.
OML Center was represented by Program Manager Ms. Perlyn Pulhin and the rest of the Yolanda research team. The OML Center’s project entitled “Evidence-based Rehabilitation of Yolanda-affected Areas” aims to provide long-term recommendations in terms of land use planning, and ecosystems rehabilitation and management on the selected cities and municipalities in Leyte and Eastern Samar. The OML Center further provides support to OPARR by being its scientific arm as well as facilitating seminars and discussions among experts to improve the rebuilding processes in the Yolanda-affected areas.
The ABS-CBN Sagip-Kapamilya was represented by Mr. Marcel Rinon while EDC was represented by Mr. Leonardo Ablaza along with the EDC Leyte Rebuilding Team. ABS-CBN Sagip Kapamilya and EDC worked hand-in-hand not only in the relief efforts but also in rebuilding typhoon-resistant classrooms in selected schools in Leyte. Further, EDC also provided livelihood assistance through short courses on carpentry, plumbing, and electrial installation and maintenance. Usec. Antonio lauded the efforts on the rebuilt classrooms that withstood Typhoon Ruby and served as an evacuation site during the course of the said typhoon.
OPARR concluded that the rehabilitation is still a long way to go and they have various plans on covering all the facets in rehabilitation and recovery. He further stressed out the value of the private sector in rebuilding the Yolanda-affected areas.
